In their bid to carve out a Bulgarian national style, Kutev and his generation also turned to sacred music composition. In this setting of one of the most important settings from the Orthodox Divine Liturgy, the Cherubic Hymn, Kutev blends techniques honed in his folk music arrangements and applies them to a traditional unmeasured Bulgarian plainsong setting. The result is something refreshingly new but which is deeply rooted in Bulgaria’s 1200-year old Christian heritage.
